Foel Wen

Foel Wen isn't a scramble that'll take your breath away with drama, but it's a proper solid walk from Llanbedr that rewards you with views across Cardigan Bay and into the Snowdonia massif beyond. The peak itself sits at around 600 metres, making it accessible enough for walkers who don't fancy the big mountains but want more than a gentle stroll.

You'll gain height steadily through open moorland - the sort of terrain that feels properly wild without being technically difficult. On a clear day, the vista stretches all the way to the coast. Cloudy days, mind you, and you're walking blind through bracken.

This works best for walkers aged 10 and up who can manage two or three hours out and back. Families after an easy afternoon won't find it demanding, though there's little to do once you've reached the summit besides turning round and heading back. History buffs might appreciate knowing this area has Bronze Age burial cairns scattered about, though you'd need to search for them.

Camp at Shell Island just 4.7 miles away - it's the standout site locally - or base yourself at Woodlands Caravan Park closer to Llanbedr if you want something more conventional. The walk itself is free, naturally, and there's no specific timing issue; just avoid waterlogged conditions after heavy rain when the moorland gets properly boggy. Rhaeadr Nantcol Waterfalls are nearby too if you want to combine this with a second walk on the same day.
