Foggy Lees Plantation

The woodland at Foggy Lees Plantation spreads across a decent chunk of Staffordshire, though it's the sort of place that doesn't announce itself loudly. You'll find proper mixed forest here - conifers planted in neat rows alongside older broadleaf trees that have cracked through gaps in the forestry management. It's quiet, which is either a draw or a disappointment depending on what you want from a woodland walk.

The paths are generally firm and easy underfoot, winding through the trees without too much elevation change. You won't find dramatic views or rushing streams - this is woodland for the sake of walking through woodland. Good for clearing your head, less good if you're after a scenic Instagram moment. It works well enough as part of a wider ramble around the Bakewell area, breaking up a day of Peak District footpaths with something low-key.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after half an hour, but teenagers who actually enjoy walking (rather than being dragged along) will be fine here. Allow a couple of hours if you're planning a proper circuit, though you could manage a quick 40-minute spin through. There's nothing stopping you turning up - no visible entrance fees or gates that I could spot, though that's always worth checking locally before you go.

If you're camping at Bank House Farm just up the road, this makes a sensible morning option before heading out to the more dramatic walks around the Peaks.
