Moatlow Knob

Standing at 413 metres, this unassuming peak offers one of the quieter walks in the Peak District without the crowds that swamp nearby Mam Tor or Kinder Scout. The climb from the car park near Youlgreave is steady rather than punishing, taking about 45 minutes through typical Derbyshire limestone country.

What strikes you most is the 360-degree view from the top - proper panoramic stuff that takes in the White Peak's rolling hills and dry stone walls stretching towards Bakewell. On clear days you can spot the higher Dark Peak moorlands to the north. It's not dramatic in the way Stanage Edge is, but there's something deeply satisfying about this rounded summit.

Families with older children will manage the walk fine, though toddlers might struggle with the final rocky section. Serious hikers often use it as a warm-up before tackling the bigger peaks, or link it with nearby Lathkill Dale for a longer day out. The whole circuit takes around two hours if you're not dawdling.

For those staying at the various sites around Bakewell - Peak Pods and Lathkill Wild Campsite are both within a couple of miles - this makes a decent morning walk before the afternoon crowds descend on the more famous spots. Pack a flask and take your time at the top.
