Lathkill Head Cave

Water bubbles up from deep underground here, marking the source of one of the Peak District's most beautiful rivers. Lathkill Head Cave sits in a limestone cliff face just upstream from Monyash, where the crystal-clear Lathkill Dale begins its journey. The cave mouth is fairly small and unassuming - don't expect dramatic arches or soaring chambers.

Most visitors come for the walk rather than the cave itself. The footpath from Monyash village leads through some lovely countryside before reaching this quiet spot. It's about a 20-minute stroll each way, nothing too strenuous.

Walkers and nature lovers will appreciate this more than families with young children, who might find it a bit anticlimactic after the build-up. The real draw is watching the spring water emerge from the rock and understanding how these limestone dales were carved over millennia. Bring a torch if you want to peer inside, though there's not much to see beyond the entrance.

Timing your visit after heavy rain can be rewarding - the spring runs stronger and the whole dale comes alive. If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites like Lathkill Wild or Knotlow Farm, this makes a pleasant morning excursion before exploring Bakewell or the bigger attractions around Buxton. Allow an hour including the walk, and wear proper boots as the path can be muddy.
