Low Moor Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Bakewell, Low Moor Wood is the kind of place you stumble upon when you're exploring the White Peak on foot rather than hunting for it deliberately. The forest floor is thick with moss and leaf litter, and the canopy does a decent job of blocking out the world when you need it to. It's not massive - you could wander through in under an hour if you're not stopping - but it has that restful quality that makes you forget you're only minutes from the market town.

Walkers will find it worthwhile, especially if you're piecing together a longer route across the area. The paths are generally clear underfoot, though muddy patches are inevitable in winter. There are no dramatic vistas or waterfalls here; it's intimate rather than showy. Children get a kick out of it if they like climbing over fallen trees and looking for wildlife, but it won't hold their attention for hours on end.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan sites - Newhaven Holiday Park is barely three miles away - it makes for an easy morning stroll before heading into Bakewell itself or pushing on to the larger walking circuits in the Peak District. Free to access, no facilities that we're aware of, so come prepared. Best visited after dry weather when the paths aren't completely sodden. It's not the showpiece of the area, but it's genuine woodland on your doorstep.
