Walking into Friskney Decoy Wood feels like stepping back into working countryside. This isn't a manicured nature reserve with visitor centers and gift shops - it's a proper working landscape where the old decoy ponds still function as they have for centuries, designed to trap wildfowl for food.

The wood itself is small and manageable, perfect for a couple of hours' wandering if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like Riverside or Grange Farm. You'll find paths winding through woodland with glimpses of the historic decoy ponds - shallow artificial lakes where duck trappers once worked. The appeal here is straightforward: it's genuinely quiet, genuinely rural, and genuinely interesting if you care about how people actually lived and worked on the Lincolnshire fens.

Birdwatchers will get the most from it. Winter brings visiting wildfowl, spring offers nesting birds, and the whole year round you're likely to see things you won't spot in your garden.
