Garbh Bheinn

The walk up Garbh Bheinn is properly steep and will test your legs, but the payoff from the summit justifies every aching muscle on the way down. This peak rises above Kinlochleven with real drama - the name means 'rough mountain' in Gaelic, and it doesn't disappoint on that front.

From the base near Kinlochleven, you're looking at a solid three to four hours there and back if you're moving at a decent pace. The route climbs through moorland and rocky terrain, and the final push involves some genuine scrambling on loose stone. It's not technical climbing, but it demands respect and proper footwear.

Seriously fit hill walkers will love this one. It's the kind of peak that rewards preparation - bring water, snacks, and a map. Families with younger kids might find it a slog; it's not a casual afternoon wander. In clear weather the views across the Mamores and down to Loch Leven are exceptional. Go on a grey day and you'll regret it.
