Garden Wood

Dense canopy blocks most of the afternoon light, creating that proper woodland atmosphere where bird calls echo differently and footsteps crunch on decades of fallen leaves. Garden Wood sits just outside Chester, a relatively compact stretch of mixed forest that feels surprisingly wild given how close it is to the city centre.

Dog walkers dominate the early morning hours here, and rightly so - the network of well-trodden paths makes for easy navigation without needing an OS map. Families with young kids will find it manageable too, though teenagers might roll their eyes after twenty minutes unless they're into photography or nature spotting.

The wood connects to several footpaths that stretch towards the Cheshire countryside, so serious walkers can extend their route considerably. Most casual visitors stick to the main circuit, which takes about forty minutes at a gentle pace. Spring brings decent bluebells, though nothing spectacular compared to what you'll find further north.

Location-wise, it works well if you're staying at any of the holiday parks around Delamere - The Ridgeway Country Holiday Park and Northwood Caravan Park are both within easy reach. Lady Heyes Holiday Park guests are looking at a short drive rather than a walk, but it's still worth the trip for a proper woodland stroll.

Expect muddy patches after rain and limited parking at the main entrance. Free access as far as I could tell, though signage is minimal.
