Garn Fawr

The walk up Garn Fawr is properly steep, but that's rather the point. This Pembrokeshire peak sits around 1,200 feet up, and once you've hauled yourself to the top, the views across the Preseli Hills are genuinely excellent - on a clear day you can see all the way to Cardigan Bay. The summit itself is marked by an Iron Age hillfort, which adds a bit of history to what might otherwise be just another grind uphill.

It's the kind of place that rewards walkers and history types more than casual strollers. Families with keen hikers will manage it fine, but younger kids might find the ascent tedious rather than fun. Allow a solid hour and a half each way depending on fitness, and wear proper boots - the paths can be boggy, especially after rain.

The real appeal is the isolation. It's not some overcrowded tourist trap near Haverfordwest; you'll likely have the hillfort to yourself. That sense of space matters. Coming back down takes less time, which is always a relief on the knees.

If you're staying at one of the local parks - Tregroes or Preseli Glamping sit closest at under 4 miles away - it's a cracking half-day excursion that beats sitting on the campsite. The Preseli range itself is proper walking country, so if you're basing yourself at Fishguard Holiday Park or Trellyn Woodland Camping, Garn Fawr fits nicely into a longer hiking itinerary. Free to visit, naturally.
