Glenmore Forest Park

Glenmore Forest Park sits right on Aviemore's doorstep, and it's the sort of place that makes you understand why people bother with Scottish holidays at all. Thousands of acres of Caledonian pine forest, proper wilderness that doesn't require a four-day expedition to appreciate. You can walk for ten minutes or ten hours depending on what you fancy - there's a loch in the middle of it all, Loch Morlich, with a beach (yes, really) where families scatter themselves in summer. The forest tracks are excellent for cycling too if you've got the legs for it.

What strikes you most is how accessible it all is without feeling touristy. You've got serious walkers tackling proper trails up into the Cairngorms foothills, families doing gentle loops around the loch, and cyclists hammering along the forest roads. Most of the day-use facilities are free, though car parks charge a few quid. Allow at least half a day if you want to properly stretch your legs; an hour around the loch is fine if you're just passing through.

Stay at Highland Glen Holiday Park nearby and you're genuinely spoiled - this isn't some attraction you tick off and forget. You'll find yourself back here most days. Spring brings snowmelt roaring down the burns, summer gets rammed with families, and autumn light through the pines is something else. Winter can be moody and wet, but that's half the appeal if you don't mind getting properly muddy.
