Great Holland Pits Nature Reserve

Former gravel workings turned wildlife sanctuary, these flooded pits just outside Clacton-on-Sea have developed into proper birding territory over the past few decades. Three main lakes dominate the reserve, each attracting different species depending on the season - expect reed warblers and sedge warblers in summer, with winter bringing teal, wigeon and the odd bittern if you're lucky.

Birdwatchers will get the most from this spot, though families might enjoy the easy walking paths around the largest lake. The lack of facilities means bringing your own refreshments, and the paths can get muddy after rain - proper walking boots recommended.

Allow two to three hours for a decent visit, longer if you're serious about your bird list. Early morning visits typically yield better results, particularly in spring when migration is at its peak.

Location-wise, it's well placed for a day out from several nearby holiday parks. Parkdean's Valley Farm and Highfield Grange sites are both under three miles away, making this an easy escape from the bucket-and-spade routine. The reserve feels genuinely wild compared to the busy Clacton seafront, though don't expect dramatic scenery - this is classic Essex wetland rather than picture-postcard countryside. Worth the short drive if you fancy some peace and the chance of spotting something special through your binoculars.
