The pier stretches into the North Sea like a Victorian finger pointing toward the continent, while seagulls wheel overhead and the familiar clatter of amusement arcades drifts on the salty breeze. This is proper British seaside territory - candy floss, donkey rides, and that slightly faded glamour that makes places like Clacton endearing rather than embarrassing.

Clacton's beach is the main draw, naturally. Wide, sandy, and mercifully unspoilt by overdevelopment. The pier does what piers should do - juts out into the waves with fairground rides and fish and chips. It's not trying to be Brighton or Southend; it's doing its own thing quite nicely.

Beyond the obvious seaside attractions, Great Holland Pits Nature Reserve offers a completely different pace. The former gravel workings have been transformed into a proper wildlife haven, managed by Essex Wildlife Trust. Expect reed beds, open water, and decent birdwatching opportunities - particularly good for spotting water birds that wouldn't be seen dead near the pier.

Getting here couldn't be simpler. Kirby Cross station puts you within striking distance, though most visitors arrive by car along the A133. The surrounding Essex countryside is flatter than a pancake but surprisingly pleasant, with Great Holland Village maintaining that sleepy rural feel despite being so close to the coast.

You get the best of both worlds - countryside peace in the evenings and seaside chaos whenever you fancy it.
