Gruffalo

Deep in Delamere Forest, this outdoor sculpture trail brings Julia Donaldson's beloved Gruffalo story to life through a series of wooden carvings positioned along woodland paths. Following the mouse's journey, families encounter each character from the tale - the fox, owl, snake and of course the fearsome Gruffalo himself - crafted from fallen trees by local artists.

Young children absolutely love this trail, though teenagers might find it a bit beneath them unless they're babysitting younger siblings. The sculptures are well-made and have weathered the elements nicely, creating an atmospheric woodland adventure that works brilliantly even on drizzly days. Allow about an hour for the full circuit, though little ones often want to climb on the carvings and act out scenes, which can stretch things longer.

Located just outside Northwich, it's perfectly positioned for families staying at any of the nearby forest parks like Delamere Forest Camping or Wild Shore Delamere. The trail connects well with other forest walks if adults fancy extending the exercise, and there's a proper visitor centre with loos and a café nearby. Best tackled in wellies if it's been wet - the forest paths can get properly muddy, especially after rain.
