You'll see Roman pottery, medieval bits, and proper Victorian displays that look like someone actually cared about arrangement rather than just cramming things in.

The Saxon gallery is the main draw. If you're into early English history, the artefacts here - jewellery, tools, burial goods - tell you more about daily life than you'd expect from a small provincial museum. There's also a decent collection of local ceramics and crafts, plus temporary exhibitions that rotate with actual thought behind them.

It's free, which helps. Allow an hour minimum - two if you're the type who reads every label. Mornings tend to be quieter. Families with older kids will get something from it; younger ones might fidget after thirty minutes. The layout is manageable, nothing vast or exhausting.

If you're camped at Chantry Wood or any of the parks within a few miles of town, this works as a rainy-day option or a gentle morning before heading out walking in the Surrey Hills. It won't blow your mind, but it's the kind of place that earns its free admission - solid local history without pretension. The café nearby is decent too if you need a coffee after.
