Heathpool Plantation

The woodland around Heathpool Plantation spreads across Shropshire's countryside like a proper escape route from Shrewsbury. It's the sort of place where you can lose an afternoon without trying - dense forest, quiet paths, and enough green to remind you why you came to the county in the first place.

What you're actually doing here is walking. There's no visitor centre or tea shop, no admission fee or turnstiles. Just trees, paths, and the occasional sound of wildlife. The plantation itself is mixed woodland - coniferous and broadleaf - which means it shifts with the seasons. Spring brings a decent canopy, autumn turns the place gold and brown, winter strips it back to skeletal branches and proper silence.

Walkers will get the most from this spot. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after an hour or so, but if your children actually enjoy a proper forest walk without distractions, they'll do fine here. The paths vary in difficulty - some are straightforward, others require decent footwear and leg power.

Allow two to three hours if you want to explore properly rather than just bash through it. Spring and autumn are lovely, though winter has its own appeal if you don't mind the damp.

Neither are far, so you could easily combine forest walking with a stable base nearby. The plantation works as a morning or afternoon venture rather than a full-day commitment.
