The woodland sits just outside town and offers straightforward walking through mixed forest, the kind where you can actually lose yourself for an hour without feeling like you're on a theme park trail.

What you get here is genuine woodland rather than manicured parkland. There are decent paths through beech and oak, decent enough sightlines if the trees aren't too thick with leaf, and enough elevation to make your legs feel like you've done something. It's walker territory, really - families with young kids might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes, unless they're the type who'll spend an afternoon turning sticks into swords.

The nearest camping options - Hale Farm (less than a mile away) and Dernwood Farm Glamping just beyond that - make Highdown Wood a natural addition to a park-based week in Sussex. Horam Manor Country Park sits 1.3 miles south if you want something more structured. Warren Wood is further out but worth knowing about if you're plotting a broader walking route.

There's no entrance fee that we can find, and you can wander through whenever daylight allows. Allow a couple of hours if you actually want to explore it properly rather than just tick it off.
