Holds Hill Plantation

The woodland walks at Holds Hill Plantation offer proper respite from the rolling farmland that dominates this stretch of Lincolnshire. It's a working forest - not a manicured park - with paths that wind through mature trees and genuinely quiet corners where you can actually hear birdsong without traffic noise underneath it.

What you get here depends entirely on what you want from a walk. Come for a brisk forty-minute circuit and you'll see mixed woodland, plenty of shade, and enough elevation changes to feel like you've done something. Stay longer and there are quieter spots deeper in the trees where families with younger children can let them loose without worrying about crowds or roads. The forest floor is soft underfoot after rain, which is both brilliant for walking and fairly muddy depending on the season.

Market Rasen is just down the road, which means this works well as a morning or afternoon leg of a longer day out rather than a destination in itself. If you're based at Into the Wild Glamping or Lindsey Trail Touring Park - both are within striking distance - it's an excellent way to stretch your legs without driving far. The Lincolnshire Wolds National Landscape offers bigger vistas if you want something grander, but Holds Hill does the woodland thing better than most spots around here.

Best visited in autumn when the canopy thins out and you can actually see between the trees. Summer can feel a bit oppressive with the density of leaves. Allow two to three hours if you're not rushing.
