James's Hill

From the roadside near Brockenhurst, this modest hill barely registers on most maps, but the walk up through ancient heathland rewards you with sweeping views across the New Forest canopy. The climb takes about twenty minutes at a gentle pace, following well-worn paths that weave between gorse and silver birch.

Walkers and families with older children will appreciate the relatively easy ascent and the proper sense of achievement at the top. The summit itself is more of a clearing than a dramatic peak, but on clear days you can spot the Isle of Wight shimmering in the distance. Early morning visits are particularly lovely when mist clings to the forest below.
