Kielder Bird Of Prey Centre

You're standing at the edge of Kielder Water with a Harris hawk on your arm - actually on your arm - and suddenly the whole point of this place clicks. The Bird of Prey Centre sits right by the water near Hexham, and it's essentially a working falconry operation that lets visitors get hands-on with some genuinely impressive birds. Eagles, owls, falcons, the lot. You can watch flying displays if you time it right, handle the birds during experiences, or just wander through and gawp at creatures most of us only see in wildlife documentaries.

This is unmissable if you've got kids old enough to focus for more than five minutes - the handling sessions are the draw, full stop. Adults who are into birds or photography will find plenty to occupy themselves too, though the pure spectacle is definitely aimed at families. The whole setup feels properly run, not some tatty roadside attraction.

Check their website for opening hours and experience prices before you head over - it's not free admission, but the falconry experiences are worth the cost if that's your thing. Allow a couple of hours minimum; you could easily stretch it to half a day if you do a handling session and grab lunch.

If you're staying at Kielder Waterside and Lodges or Landal Kielder Waterside - basically on the doorstep - this is an obvious addition to your itinerary. Less essential if you're based elsewhere in Northumberland, but worth the drive if raptors are your thing.
