Kilbrandon Church

On the isle of Seil, just a short ferry hop from Oban, Kilbrandon Church sits quietly on a hillside with views across the Firth of Lorn. It's genuinely peaceful - the kind of place where you can hear nothing but wind and the occasional seabird.

The church itself is small and straightforward, dating back centuries. What makes it worth the detour is the graveyard, which tells proper stories of the island's maritime past. You'll find weathered stones marking families who lived and died here, fishing folk mostly. There's something affecting about that - walking among people whose lives were tied completely to these waters.

Inside, it's simple. No grand stonework or ornate carvings, just a functional space for worship. The real draw is standing outside, looking down towards the water and thinking about what life must have been like when this was the hub of island community.

It works best paired with a stay at one of the nearby holiday parks - Argyll Kayaker Cove is less than a mile away if you want proper accommodation with kayaking on tap, or Sunnybrae if you're after something more traditional. The church visit alone takes 20 minutes, maybe half an hour if you're reading the stones carefully. Call ahead from Oban to check current access, as it's not staffed. Go on a clear day if you can - the views across the firth are the real reward, and they're considerably less impressive when it's raining sideways.
