Llys-y-frân Reservoir

You'll spot the water before you hear it - a proper wide expanse of still blue tucked into the Pembrokeshire hills between Haverfordwest and the Preseli Mountains. Llys-y-frân Reservoir is less dramatic than you might expect from the surrounding landscape, but that's rather the point. This is water for serious walkers and families after a gentler afternoon, not adrenaline junkies.

The reservoir itself is outstanding for a circuit walk. There's a reasonable path that runs most of the way around, taking you past woodland and open moorland depending on which section you choose. It takes roughly ninety minutes to two hours to do the full loop without rushing, and the views back across the water to the ridges beyond are genuinely lovely. Fishing happens here too, if you're into that sort of thing.

Who gets the most from it? Families with primary-age kids will manage the walk fine, though teenagers might find it a touch dull. Dog walkers absolutely love this place - there's water, space, and few crowds even on decent weekends. If you're a keen birdwatcher or photographer, dawn or dusk is when you'll want to be here.

It's free to visit and there's no particular season that shuts it down, though winter mud can be ankle-deep in places. Haverfordwest sits just five miles or so away, making Llys-y-frân a cracking half-day option when you're based at Quarry Park Camping or one of the other local sites. Pair it with a visit to Preseli proper if you want the bigger walking day.
