Loch Garten
About Loch Garten
It's a straightforward place - you pull up, walk to the hide, and either see birds or you don't. The whole visit takes 90 minutes if you're unhurried. The centre has a small exhibition space and the usual café fare. Free entry to the loch itself, though there's a donation suggested for the RSPB work happening here.
This works brilliantly as a half-day stop if you're staying at Highland Glen Holiday Park nearby, especially if you've got kids keen on wildlife. Older walkers might find the osprey season genuinely thrilling - watching a five-foot wingspan drop onto the water from 30 feet up is something else. Outside the breeding season it's quieter, less dramatic, but the forest walk alone makes it worthwhile.
Honestly, don't go out of your way if you're not interested in birds. But if you're in the area and the season's right, it beats sitting in another gift shop in Aviemore.
