Lucas Castle

Standing atop this modest hill offers surprisingly good views across the New Forest heathland, though don't expect dramatic Alpine vistas. Lucas Castle isn't actually a castle at all - it's a Bronze Age burial mound that someone rather grandly named centuries ago. The walk up takes about twenty minutes from the nearest car park, following well-marked forest paths through typical New Forest terrain of gorse and heather.

Families with older children will enjoy the trek, but toddlers might find it a bit much. The summit itself is fairly unremarkable - just a grassy mound with a few information boards about the area's ancient history. History enthusiasts will appreciate learning about the Bronze Age settlement patterns, though there's not much physical evidence to see beyond the earthwork itself.

Best visited on clear days when you can properly appreciate the forest panorama stretching towards Lyndhurst. The views are pleasant rather than spectacular, but it's a decent leg-stretch if you're staying at one of the nearby campsites like Ocknell or Longbeech. Worth combining with other New Forest walks rather than making it the sole destination. Allow an hour return including time at the top, and bring a map as forest paths can be confusing.
