Lyndhurst Hill

Standing at 79 metres, this gentle rise offers one of the finest viewpoints across the New Forest's ancient heathland. The walk up through mixed woodland takes about 20 minutes from the car park near Lyndhurst, though the gradient is hardly challenging - more of a pleasant amble than a proper climb.

From the summit, the panorama stretches across miles of purple heather and golden gorse, with wild ponies often grazing in the middle distance. On clear days you can spot the Isle of Wight on the horizon. It's particularly lovely in late summer when the heather blooms, though autumn brings its own rewards with the brilliant yellows and russets of beech and birch.

Families will find this an easy introduction to hill walking - the path is well-defined and even toddlers manage it without too much drama. Dog walkers love it too, though keep leads handy during foaling season. The New Forest ponies have right of way and can be unpredictable around excited pets.

Being so close to Brockenhurst, it makes a cracking morning walk before exploring the forest's other corners. Several campsites dot the area, including Matley Wood and Hollands Wood, making this an ideal gentle start or wind-down walk for families staying in the National Park. Allow an hour return trip, including time to appreciate the view.
