Magnis

All that remains of Magnis is a low earthwork on farmland just outside Hereford - which is exactly what makes it worth a detour if you're into Roman Britain. This was once a proper fort, occupied around AD 75 onwards as part of Rome's push into Wales, and the ditch-and-bank outline you can still trace tells you something about how the Romans built. It's not flashy. There's no visitor centre, no interpretive boards, nothing to make it easy. You're essentially walking around a field working it out for yourself, and that's rather the point.

The site works best for walkers and history types who don't mind a bit of detective work. If you're camping at Long Coppice or Preston Campsite - both within a couple of miles - it's a logical morning detour before heading elsewhere in Herefordshire. Allow twenty minutes to half an hour, depending on how much time you spend trying to photograph the earthworks, which are admittedly subtle.

Right now information is thin on the ground: no formal opening hours that I can find, and access depends on the farmer's goodwill. The Pastscape record suggests it's walkable from the road, but do check locally before you go. Kids won't get much from it unless they're already keen on Romans or archaeology - it lacks the wow factor of a ruined wall or visible structure. For adults who appreciate the quieter side of heritage, though, it's genuinely worthwhile. You're standing on something genuinely old and strategically important, even if it looks like a field.
