Mendip Hills National Landscape

The Mendip Hills roll across Somerset like something out of a landscape painting, all gentle slopes and sudden rocky outcrops that catch you off guard. This isn't one specific attraction you tick off a list - it's a proper region to explore, stretching across 158 square miles of countryside between Wells and Cheddar. What you actually get is miles of walking trails, dramatic limestone gorges, and the kind of views that make you understand why people have been living here for thousands of years.

Cheddar Gorge is the showstopper if you want drama - those sheer cliffs rise 450 feet straight up from the valley floor. But honestly, the quieter spots are often better. Walk up through the scrubland and you'll stumble onto Iron Age hill forts and cave systems that genuinely feel like discoveries rather than tourist stops. History types will lose themselves here for days; families with younger kids might find the walking a bit relentless unless you break it into short bursts.

There's no entrance fee to the landscape itself - you're free to roam. Allow a full day minimum if you want to actually experience it rather than just drive through. Go in spring or autumn when it's not rammed with school holidays crowds.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby camps - Cheddar Camping, Cheddar Woods, or Strawberryfield Park are all within spitting distance - you've got the best of both worlds. Day trips to Wells Cathedral and the quieter villages are easy, but the hills themselves are where the real walk-around time happens. Not flashy. Just genuinely good.
