Metcalf's Wood

Walk into Metcalf's Wood and you're immediately swallowed by proper woodland - the kind with actual trees and space to breathe, not a manicured nature reserve. It's on the doorstep of Barnard Castle, which means it works brilliantly as a half-day break from the market town's castles and tea shops without needing to drive anywhere.

The wood itself is straightforward: woodland paths, decent walking, nothing too technical. You'll find yourself among native trees, which is always nicer than conifer plantations. It's the sort of place where you can spend an hour or three depending on your mood - families with younger kids might manage a couple of loops, but serious walkers could easily lose themselves here for half a day. The paths are generally good underfoot, though after rain they get properly muddy, so bring decent boots.

Who gets the most from this? Anyone staying at the caravan parks nearby - Thorpe Farm Centre is less than a mile away, making it a natural after-breakfast walk. Walkers preparing for longer Teesdale rambles will find it a decent warm-up. Children won't be bored if you're not expecting theme parks, but it's not a destination attraction on its own.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which keeps it quiet and unspoilt. Free to access, open year-round - just park sensibly near Barnard Castle and head in. Winter walking here is actually excellent; the bare trees mean better views through the wood, and you'll avoid the summer crowds completely.
