Milestone

A weathered stone marker standing somewhere along Shropshire's quiet lanes - that's a Milestone. These old boundary stones and distance posts dot the county, leftovers from when travellers actually needed to count the miles to Shrewsbury or wherever they were headed. Most are easy to miss if you're whizzing past in a car, which rather defeats the purpose.

They're proper historical bits, though. Walk the footpaths around here and you'll spot them marking old drovers' routes and turnpike roads. If you're the sort who likes reading old inscriptions and imagining Georgians trudging along these same tracks, you'll get something out of it. Kids might manage five minutes before asking if there's anything else to do.

The practical reality: it's free, it's always accessible, and you don't need more than ten minutes unless you're photographing it or doing some local history research. Bring it into a wider Shropshire walk rather than treating it as a destination in itself. The nearby campsites - Brook House Farm, Small Batch, By the Wood, and the others scattered within five miles - make decent bases for exploring the county's lanes on foot. Park up at one of them, do a morning ramble, spot the Milestone, and carry on to something with more immediate appeal. It's the sort of thing that matters if you're into local heritage, less so if you want tangible attractions. Worth a detour if you're walking anyway, but don't plan an afternoon around it.
