Pewley Down

The chalk grassland sweeping across Pewley Down offers proper Surrey countryside - open, rolling, and genuinely peaceful. It's a working landscape rather than a manicured attraction, with native wildflowers and uninterrupted views that stretch for miles on a clear day. You'll find yourself on footpaths that locals actually use, not tourist routes, which is refreshing.

Walkers get the most from this one. The terrain is manageable but undulating enough to feel like proper exercise, and the paths are well-maintained. History enthusiasts might catch themselves noticing the Iron Age fort remains scattered across the down - subtle, barely obvious unless you know what you're looking for. It's the sort of place where you can spend an afternoon rambling without bumping into crowds.

There's no charge and no opening hours to worry about - you simply turn up. Allow two to three hours if you're doing a decent walk across the down, or grab an hour for a quick circuit if you're based nearby. Spring and early summer are brilliant for wildflowers; autumn has decent light. Winter can be muddy underfoot, fair warning.

If you're camping at Chantry Wood - less than a mile away - this becomes your obvious morning or evening walk. It's close enough to base yourself at the nearer sites and still have proper countryside on your doorstep. The down connects to wider footpath networks too, so it's less a single destination and more a genuine piece of the Surrey Hills walking terrain.
