Pitchford Church, St Michael & All Angels

The church sits quietly in the village of Pitchford, just outside Shrewsbury, and it's one of those places that rewards you for turning off the main road. St Michael & All Angels is a proper medieval building - the sort that makes you want to sit on a pew for twenty minutes and just look around. The interior has some genuinely interesting features: carved roof timbers that are seriously old, and the kind of stone walls that speak to centuries of weddings, funerals, and Sunday services.

This is absolutely worth a visit if you're the sort who likes poking around churches and reading gravestones. Historians will find plenty to occupy them, and it's a peaceful spot if you just want to escape the tourist trail. Kids might manage ten minutes before restlessness sets in, unless you're raising the type who can spend hours looking at roof bosses and font details.

There's no charge to get in, and you can usually wander round at your own pace. It's not the kind of place you'd plan a whole day around, but perfectly doable as a morning exploration before heading back to Shrewsbury for lunch. If you're staying at one of the local holiday parks - Spring Field Dark Skies Eco Camp is closest at just over three miles - it makes a good gentle walk or short drive. Park up, spend an hour wandering the churchyard and interior, then head back for a cup of tea. Low-key, genuine, and free. That's hard to argue with.
