Ravelin Gill

A proper walk through ancient woodland just outside Barnard Castle, Ravelin Gill is one of those places where the trees do most of the talking. You're walking alongside a small gill - that's a stream, if you're not from these parts - with steep wooded banks either side. The canopy's thick enough that even on a bright day it feels like twilight in there.

It's not a destination in the conventional sense. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no car park with a café. You just turn up and walk. The main appeal is the woodland itself - mixed broadleaves with plenty of moss-covered rocks and that particular smell of damp earth and rotting leaves that proper forest walkers live for. The gill itself is modest but does create some nice little cascades after heavy rain.

Historically types will find the name intriguing - Ravelin was a type of fortification, though what connection that has to this particular bit of County Durham remains unclear. Worth investigating if you're into local archaeology.

Best suited to walkers who don't need signposting and dramatic viewpoints. Half an hour minimum, though you could easily spend longer poking about. Children will manage it fine if they're happy on uneven ground and don't demand constant activity. It pairs well with a stay at Hill Top Huts nearby - gives you a quick forest leg-stretch without driving far.

Go in autumn when the woodland floor's carpeted in colour, or spring when everything's budding. Summer can feel a bit gloomy under the dense canopy.
