Staying at one of the holiday parks around Ashbourne means Ray Wood makes a lovely morning or afternoon excursion. Callow Top and Ashbourne Heights are both within easy driving distance, as are several of the smaller sites scattered around this part of the Peak District fringe. It's the sort of place that reminds you why Derbyshire's countryside remains so well-regarded - proper walking country without the tourist trappings.
