Saint David's Church

The cathedral sits on a sloped site just outside Haverfordwest, its grey stone tower rising above the surrounding fields in a way that stops you mid-walk. This isn't a showy building - it's genuinely ancient, with roots going back to the 6th century when Saint David himself was venerated here, though what you see now is largely medieval work punctuated by Victorian restoration.

Inside, it's quiet and atmospheric in that particular way of Welsh churches - high vaulted ceilings, decent stained glass, and the sort of calm that makes you want to sit on a pew for longer than you'd planned. The tombs matter if you're into genealogy or local history, though casual visitors get more from standing at the eastern end and taking in the proportions of the building.

This works best as part of a broader walk around Haverfordwest rather than a destination in itself. You're looking at thirty minutes if you're thorough, less if you're just passing through. The surrounding countryside is proper lovely - rolling Pembrokeshire hills and farmland that justifies the detour if you're staying at Pembrokeshire Meadows Camping or one of the other parks dotted within a few miles.

Check opening times before you go. Like many parish churches, access can be variable depending on services and the whims of whoever holds the keys. Free to enter when it's open, no crowds, and far enough from the tourist trail that you won't be jostled by day-trippers.
