School Knott

Views across the Windermere valley unfold beautifully from this modest Lakeland fell, though you'll work harder for them than the height suggests. School Knott sits at 1,260 feet above sea level, making it more of an ambitious walk than a gentle stroll - the path up from Windermere town is properly steep in places and can be muddy after rain.

Families with older children who fancy a challenge will find this a good test piece. The summit itself is unmarked by any cairn or trig point, just a grassy knoll that offers lovely views south over Lake Windermere and the surrounding fells. On clear days you can pick out the Coniston range to the west.

Expect to spend about three hours return from Windermere, longer if you're carrying a picnic or stopping frequently for photos. The route isn't waymarked particularly well, so decent map skills help - this isn't one for navigation novices.

For families staying at nearby holiday parks like Fallbarrow or White Cross Bay, it makes a decent half-day adventure when the weather's settled. The walk back down is kinder on the knees than the ascent, though still requires care on the steeper sections. Worth doing if you're based locally and want something more adventurous than the lakeside paths, but probably not worth a special journey unless you're collecting Wainwright fells.
