About Sheep Hurdles

Stone circles don't get more mysterious than this Bronze Age monument on the Mendip Hills. Three concentric rings of weathered limestone blocks stand in a field just outside Wells, their original purpose lost to time but their presence still oddly compelling.

Walking among the 27 remaining stones - there were likely more originally - you can't help but wonder what ceremonies took place here 4,000 years ago. The outer circle measures about 40 metres across, making it one of Somerset's larger prehistoric monuments. It's not as spectacular as Stonehenge, mind you, but there's something rather special about having the place to yourself on a quiet afternoon.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the site's authenticity - no visitor centre or gift shop, just you and the ancient stones. The short walk from the road means families with older children can manage it easily, though toddlers might find the uneven ground tricky.

Access is free and the site is always open, being on private farmland with public footpath access. Allow about 30 minutes for a proper look around. From holiday parks like Wells Touring Park or Cheddar Camping and Caravanning Club Site, it makes a lovely morning detour before exploring Wells Cathedral or the famous caves at Cheddar Gorge.
