Sron Mhòr

The walk up Sron Mhòr from Aberfeldy is straightforward enough, and on a clear day the views across Perthshire justify the effort. You're looking at a modest peak rather than anything that'll leave you breathless, but that's rather the point - it's accessible without being a slog.

The route climbs steadily through mixed woodland before opening out onto moorland. Most walkers manage it in a couple of hours at a decent pace. The summit itself is understated; there's no grand cairn or sweeping vistas that'll make your Instagram followers jealous. What you do get is a proper sense of being up there, with the Tay Valley spreading out below and the higher mountains visible on the horizon when visibility's good.

This works best for walkers wanting something between a stroll and a proper expedition. Families with older children will manage fine if everyone's reasonably fit. Solo hikers and small groups are the real audience here - it's the kind of walk where you can think, or chat, without feeling like you're on a tourist trail.

Being so close to Aberfeldy and the surrounding holiday parks - Tummel Valley, Faskally Woods, and Blair Castle are all within five miles - makes it a natural choice for a morning outing during a longer stay. Hit it early before the light gets flat. Free to access, obviously, since it's a Scottish hill. Allow three to four hours door-to-door and you won't regret it.
