St Peter's Church, Alstonefield

The church sits on a gentle rise above Alstonefield village, a modest stone structure that's been watching over this corner of the Peak District for centuries. St Peter's rewards the kind of visitor who likes to potter about off the main drag - it's got proper character, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think.

Inside, there's enough to occupy you for twenty minutes or so. The interior keeps its medieval bones, and there are some decent monuments and fixtures if you care about that sort of thing. The churchyard is pleasant for a wander, with old graves dotted about among yews. It's free to visit, and you'll almost certainly have the place to yourself, which is rather the point.

This works best for walkers doing the Dovedale circuit or exploring the White Peak trails around Ashbourne. If you're camping at one of the nearby sites - Rivendale Lodge Retreat, Hartington Hills, or Bank House Farm Campsite are all within easy reach - you could tick this off on a quiet afternoon without any fuss. It's not a destination in itself, mind you. But paired with a proper walk through the limestone valleys, or as a stop between Ashbourne and the more famous attractions further up, it makes sense.

The village itself is tiny. There's not much beyond the church and a handful of houses. That's rather the appeal. Go on a weekday if you want real peace.
