The thing is listed and locally significant, which means someone thought it mattered enough to preserve.

The monument itself demands a closer look if you're into industrial heritage or just curious about why Victorians felt compelled to build things in the middle of nowhere. It's not a sprawling attraction that'll keep you entertained for hours - you're looking at a solid twenty minutes to half an hour if you stop to examine the stonework and take a few photos. Families with younger kids might find it underwhelming on its own, but it works brilliantly as a waypoint during a wider ramble through the area.

What makes it worthwhile is context. Stay at Beamish Glamping or Beamish Holiday Park, both within two and a half miles, and you can fold this into a broader exploration of County Durham's heritage landscape. It sits near enough to other attractions that you'd be daft not to tick it off while you're passing through. The Beamish Museum area has plenty to occupy a full day, making Star Pelaw a natural addition rather than a destination in itself.
