Waldridge Fell Country Park

Waldridge Fell is a proper stretch of moorland just outside Stanley, the kind of place where you can actually breathe. It's managed as a country park, which means there are walking trails threading through heather and grassland, and the views across Durham open up in a way that makes the drive worthwhile.

What you're getting here is straightforward - open fell countryside with a network of footpaths. There's no theme park business, no visitor centre, just landscape. Walkers will genuinely enjoy it, especially if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots like West Hall or Beamish Glamping, both just 2.5 miles away. The fell is quiet enough that you can properly clear your head, but accessible enough that it won't be a slog. Families with older kids will do fine; younger ones might find it a bit samey after forty minutes unless they're into spotting birds or learning about heathland.

Bring proper boots if the weather's been wet - the ground can be boggy in patches. There's no charge to access it, which is refreshing. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing a decent circuit; less if you just want a quick stomp about.
