Steel Fell

Steel Fell rises abruptly from the valley floor near Ambleside, offering one of the Lake District's most straightforward hill walks. It's a proper fell rather than a mountain - 1,597 feet of craggy, windswept terrain that rewards the effort with views stretching across the central fells and down towards Windermere.

The walk itself takes around two hours return from the Ambleside side, climbing steeply through rough moorland with a scree section near the top. The path is well-defined but unrelenting, so decent boots matter. It's the sort of fell that appeals to walkers wanting something more serious than a valley stroll but less technical than scrambling. The views from the summit aren't showstopping - the Lake District is full of higher peaks - but the sense of isolation up there makes it feel worth the leg work.

Families with older children who are used to hills will manage it fine. Younger kids might find the relentless climb tedious. The real value here is the accessibility from Ambleside combined with genuine fell-walking credentials.

If you're based at any of the nearby camps - Great Langdale Glamping and BaysBrown Farm Campsite are closest - Steel Fell makes a solid morning or afternoon outing. Lakeside Retreat Glamping, though further out at 5.5 miles, offers the comfort to properly rest legs afterwards. The fell itself is free to access; just park in Ambleside and head out. Go early if the weather looks settled - this one clouds over quickly.
