The Grove

Walk into The Grove and you're surrounded by ancient woodland that feels genuinely removed from the Somerset flatlands around Wells. It's the kind of place where light filters through the canopy in dusty shafts and you can hear yourself think - no gift shop, no signage overload, just proper forest.

The trees here are substantial, mixed broadleaf mostly, and the ground is soft underfoot even after rain. There are paths winding through, some clearer than others, and it's the sort of walk that reveals itself as you go. You'll spot bluebells in spring if you time it right, and the shade is genuinely welcome on hot days.

This works best for people who like their nature unfussy. Families with toddlers might find it a bit limited - there's no playground or circular route signposted - but kids who'll happily scramble over logs and splash through streams will be content for a good couple of hours. History buffs will appreciate that you're walking through landscape that's been wooded for centuries, though there's nothing obvious to point that out.

Based in Wells for a few days? The Grove makes a solid morning outing before heading to Cathedral View Glamping or Wells Touring Park. It's only a few miles from Waterrow Touring Park too, so no major detour. Give yourself an hour minimum, longer if you're the ambling type. There's no obvious entrance fee or visitor infrastructure, which is refreshing - just turn up and walk. Best avoided during peak shooting season if you're uncertain about access.
