The triangle

Three lochs converge near Kinlochleven, and if you're staying at one of the local campsites - Blackwater Hostel is practically on the doorstep - The Triangle is a proper walk rather than a casual stroll. The landscape here is raw Highland terrain: mountains rising steeply from the water, bracken and heather covering the slopes, and on a clear day the views down the glens are genuinely arresting.

It's a destination for walkers with proper legs and stamina. You're looking at a good few hours to do this properly, and the paths aren't nursery slopes - there's real elevation involved. History enthusiasts might find the old drove routes and industrial heritage from the aluminium works era interesting, though signage can be patchy. Families with young children will struggle unless the kids are genuinely experienced hikers.

The real draw is isolation and raw scenery. You won't find crowds here, which is refreshing when half of the Scottish Highlands has turned into an Instagram backdrop. Midges can be vicious in summer, so time your visit accordingly. Bring proper waterproofs - weather changes fast in these glens.

If you're based at Red Squirrel Campsite or Invercoe further along, it's worth the drive. Not a quick half-hour tourist tick-box, though. This is for people who genuinely want to feel the Highland wilderness rather than just photograph it.
