Tissington Spires

Two Gothic limestone pinnacles rise unexpectedly from farmland near Ashbourne, creating one of Derbyshire's more unusual roadside sights. These Victorian follies were built in the 1840s as ornamental features for the Tissington Hall estate, though they look for all the world like ancient church spires that have lost their churches. Standing about 60 feet tall, they're visible from the A515 and make for a proper head-turning moment if you're driving past.

You can park on the grass verge and walk right up to them - there's no formal visitor arrangement, just a bit of Derbyshire eccentricity standing in a field.
