Twelve Apostles

Standing stones scattered across a windswept hillside above Ilam might not be what you expect from the name. The Twelve Apostles stone circle - though only five stones remain upright today - sits on moorland between Ashbourne and the Staffordshire border, offering proper Peak District views without the crowds you'll find elsewhere. Bronze Age builders clearly knew a good spot when they saw one. The surviving stones, some reaching shoulder height, form part of what was once a much larger ceremonial circle dating back over 3,000 years. Walking here from the nearest car parking feels like stepping back through the centuries, especially on misty mornings when the stones emerge from the fog like ancient sentinels. History enthusiasts will appreciate the site's significance, though don't expect interpretive boards or visitor facilities - this is raw, unvarnished heritage. Families with older children who enjoy a decent walk will find the setting atmospheric, but it's probably too remote for little ones.
