Tummel Bridge

The River Tummel cuts through some genuinely impressive Perthshire scenery, and Tummel Bridge is where it all comes together - a proper Victorian crossing that's been shouldering traffic since 1841. It's not a destination that'll keep you occupied for hours, but it's the sort of landmark worth stopping at if you're driving between Pitlochry and the surrounding glens.

What you get is a solid stone bridge with decent views down the river valley, particularly lovely in autumn when the hillsides turn copper and gold. The bridge itself is unremarkable from a architectural standpoint - functional rather than fancy - but the location is the draw here. Stand in the middle and you're looking at the kind of sweeping Highland backdrop that explains why people keep coming back to this corner of Perthshire.

It works best as a brief stop rather than a planned visit. Ten minutes to stretch your legs, take a photo, maybe have a look at the river if the light's good. Walkers passing through will find it useful as a reference point, and it's close enough to Pitlochry that families staying at Parkdean Resorts Tummel Valley - literally walking distance - can easily include it in an afternoon ramble. The nearby camping at Glengoulandie offers a quieter base if you want to explore the surrounding river walks without the holiday park bustle.

No charge to cross or linger, and there's space to pull over on either side. Time it for late afternoon when the sun hits the water properly.
