About Witton Gilbert Bypass

The Witton Gilbert Bypass doesn't sound like much - and honestly, it isn't. What you're looking at is a stretch of Roman road, the kind of thing that gets archaeology types genuinely excited but won't hold most people's attention for more than ten minutes. It's basically a raised earth bank running through the countryside just outside Durham, visible as a linear feature in the landscape if you know what you're looking for.

This was part of Dere Street, one of the major Roman routes connecting York to the Scottish frontier. The fact that you can still trace it nearly 2,000 years on is genuinely impressive from an engineering standpoint - the Romans knew how to build things that lasted. But there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no facilities. You park up near Witton Gilbert village and walk the footpath alongside it. That's the experience.

It appeals mainly to Roman history enthusiasts and serious walkers interested in following ancient routes. Kids will struggle with it unless they're already obsessed with Romans. The walk itself is pleasant enough through Durham countryside, but it's not a destination in itself.

Free to access, obviously. Allow an hour or so if you're combining it with a broader walk in the area. If you're staying at West Hall Glamping just down the road, it's a reasonable morning outing before heading into Durham city centre. Better value, though, to visit Finchale Abbey Priory nearby - at least you get actual ruins to walk around.
