Wray Crag

Wray Crag sits just above Kendal, rising sharply enough to give you proper views without requiring a full day's commitment. It's a modest fell by Lake District standards, but that's rather the point - you can be up and back down in under two hours, which makes it ideal if you're camped at one of the sites near Windermere or Limefitt and fancy a quick leg-stretcher.

The walk itself is straightforward: steep in places, muddy when wet, with a decent scramble near the top if you fancy it. Nothing technical, nothing you need a rope for. The summit gives you a surprisingly decent vantage point looking back towards Kendal and out across the fells. On a clear day it's worth doing. On a grey one, honestly, you might find yourself wondering why you bothered.

History buffs won't find much here - it's not ancient, it's not dramatically scenic by Lake District reckoning, and there's no café at the top. What you get is honest walking country. Families with young legs will manage it fine. Those after Instagram moments might find it a bit underwhelming. The real appeal is how close it is to town and how little faffing about it requires.

Go in the morning, combine it with a mooch around Kendal's shops and pubs afterwards, and you've got a proper half-day sorted. It's the sort of walk locals do when they can't be bothered with the crowds further up the valley.
