New Quay

Dolphins patrol the waters just yards from the harbour wall here. And porpoises too, making this stretch of Cardigan Bay one of Wales' top marine wildlife spots. That's what draws most folk to this working fishing village perched on the dramatic Ceredigion coast - though the proper old pubs and excellent fish and chips don't hurt either.

Cei Bach Beach provides the perfect vantage point for dolphin-watching. The small shingle bay curves gently round from the main harbour, and on calm days you'll often spot dorsal fins cutting through the water. Local boat trips run from the quay, but honestly, you can see plenty from the shore if you're patient.

Beyond the marine life, there's proper countryside to explore. Llanina Woods offers gentle walks through ancient oak woodland, while the coastal path stretches for miles in both directions with cracking views across to Bardsey Island on clear days. The village itself retains its fishing heritage - trawlers still work from the harbour, and the smell of salt and seaweed hangs in the air.

Getting here requires a bit of planning. The nearest railway station is Carmarthen, about 40 miles inland, so you'll need a car really. But that's no hardship given the stunning drive through the Teifi Valley.
