Rolling downlands and ancient woodlands wrap around this Surrey market town like a green embrace. Leatherhead sits comfortably in the Mole Valley, where the river meanders through water meadows before cutting its famous gap through the North Downs.

The town itself keeps a low profile - no grand cathedral or stately pile dominates the skyline. Instead, you'll find a proper working high street with independent shops that haven't been squeezed out by chains. The weekly market still sets up in the historic centre, much as it has for centuries.

What really draws people here is the countryside on the doorstep. Hatchlands Park sprawls across the eastern edge of town, its 18th-century mansion surrounded by parkland that's perfect for long walks. Head north and you'll hit the Surrey Hills proper, where Little Kings Wood viewpoint offers cracking panoramas across the Weald.

Walking opportunities are frankly ridiculous. Shere Woodlands and Hackhurst Downs provide miles of bridleways and footpaths, while Mountain Wood and Netley Park offer quieter spots for a Sunday ramble. Norbury Park, just west of town, combines ancient yew woods with open chalk downland.

Getting here couldn't be easier - Leatherhead sits on the main London to Dorking railway line, with regular trains from Victoria and Waterloo. The M25 runs close by if you're driving, though parking in the town centre can be a bit of a faff.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. Several sites cluster around the Surrey Hills, including glamping options at Surrey Hills Yurts and traditional camping at Chantry Wood Campsite. You're perfectly placed to explore both the downs and the commuter belt villages that dot the valley.
