Black Sails

The walk up to Black Sails is what most people come for, to be honest. It's a proper fell scramble from the Great Langdale valley - steep in places, loose underfoot in others - that rewards you with views across to the Pikes and down towards Ambleside. The peak itself is modest compared to its neighbours, but the scramble makes it interesting if you're the sort who enjoys using your hands.

On a clear day you can see right across the Lake District. In poor visibility it's just a windy moorland plateau with a lot of cloud. Timing matters here. Go early if you can, before the weather turns. Allow three to four hours from the valley floor and back.

This isn't a genteel lakeside stroll. Families with young walkers might find it bit much unless they're already confident on rocky terrain. Older kids who like a challenge will get more from it than those content with flat paths. Solo walkers and fell runners seem to favour it - there's something satisfying about a short, sharp ascent that doesn't demand a full day.

The proximity to Great Langdale Campsite and BaysBrown Farm Campsite makes it straightforward to base yourself nearby. You're within striking distance of easier Valley walks if Black Sails feels too demanding, and the cluster of campsites means you've got shelter and facilities sorted before heading out. Free to access, naturally - it's fell walking. Just check conditions before you set off.
